IMPORTANT NOTE TO THE HORSEMEN OF
TAMPA BAY DOWNS

We are no longer accepting horses into our program.

If your horse raced at Gulfstream, it may qualify for Florida TRAC.

For a complete list of TAA accredited organizations, please visit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance page.

We highly recommend that you thoroughly vet an organization to ensure it meets your standard of aftercare. We make no guarantees on any of these organizations.

Donating a Horse to TROT

The first step in the process of Thoroughbred aftercare is safe retirement from racing.

The program is currently open to geldings and fillies/mares (minimum age 2) training and/or racing at Tampa Bay Downs during the live racing meet. Stallions must be castrated and given several weeks of recovery prior to entering the program.

We currently do not take horses from non-racing connections nor do we take horses outside the live racing meet even if the horse raced at Tampa Bay Downs in the past. It's our hope and goal that we will have the funding in the future to help any horse that raced at Tampa Bay Downs.

Horses entering the program must have the following: current Coggins, either barefoot or front shoes only, and up-to-date on de-worming, vaccinations and dental. We also ask that the foal papers be turned over to our organization as we file the Sold As Retired From Racing form with The Jockey Club. This ensures that the horse never races again.

Horses must be riding sound (or be riding sound once given time to rehab from any injuries) and able to be turned out. This is crucial as all horses will be re-homed. Horses with neurological issues, joint infections or acute degenerative joint disease will not have a good future and are often euthanized.

Donors will be responsible for transporting the horse to our facility. However, we may be able to work with you on this depending on the availability of free transport.

We do ask that the racing connections make a monetary donation of $500 to cover the first month of care. If the horse requires long-term rehab, a larger donation is appreciated. If a donation cannot be made, it will not impact acceptance of the horse into the program.

Our organization follows up on each adopted horse during the one-year probationary period. Mandatory updates are required from the adopters and may be shared with the former owners who may also keep in touch with the adopters, too.

At the end of the probationary period, the horse may be sold but with certain conditions as we have a strict no racing, no auction, no slaughter policy that applies to the horse's lifetime AND our organization must be provided the new owner's contact information. This is why it is crucial that each horse have a skill and be fit for purpose in order to protect it once it leaves the safeguard of our program.

Donations to Thoroughbred Retirement of Tampa, Inc. are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Equine donors will receive an acknowledgement letter indicating that the horse was donated to a 501(c)(3) public charity. The horse may or may not be used as a tax-deduction at its fair market value. It is the donor's responsibility to consult with their tax adviser on this.

Please contact us via email or call us at 352-356-8768 if you are interested in donating your horse to our program or should you have any other questions or concerns.
